Huacachina Oasis

Emerging like a mirage from the Peruvian coastal desert, Huacachina is South America's only natural desert oasis—a palm-fringed emerald lagoon surrounded by towering sand dunes reaching heights of 500 meters.
Located 5km from the city of Ica in southwestern Peru, this improbable paradise sits at the base of sculpted sand mountains that shift and reshape with Paracas winds.
The lagoon, approximately 200 meters in diameter, is fed by underground springs that create sulfur-rich waters once believed to have healing properties; in the 1940s-60s, it served as a resort for Lima's elite seeking therapeutic treatments.
Today, about 100 permanent residents live in colorful colonial-style buildings ringing the water, where restaurants, hotels, and tour agencies cater to the 200,000 annual visitors.
The dunes—part of the vast Ica Desert extending toward the Nazca Lines—present constantly evolving landscapes: wind creates ripple patterns resembling ocean waves, sunset ignites the sand in tangerine and purple hues, and the silence is profound.
The oasis has inspired Peruvian legends for centuries, including tales of a beautiful princess whose tears formed the lagoon after a young hunter accidentally shattered her mirror.
The contrast is stark: lush palm trees and Huarango (native tree species) surround azure water, while beyond, infinite golden dunes stretch toward snow-capped Andes visible on clear days, 100km distant.

How to Get There

Easy.
From Lima, take comfortable buses (4.5 hours, $15-25) directly to Ica, then taxi/mototaxi (10 minutes, $2-3) to Huacachina.
Alternatively, fly to Pisco (1 hour) and drive (1.5 hours).
Roads are excellent Pan-American Highway.
The oasis itself is tiny—entirely walkable in 10 minutes.

Accessible year-round, though summer heat (December-March) is extreme.
