Dubai is a city of superlatives.
It’s been called the city of gold, the city of dreams, the city of life, the city of skyscrapers, of attractions, of holidays… the list is pretty long.
The city is growing and modernising at a breakneck speed, but at the same time is making special efforts to preserve its rich past and cultural heritage.
What makes the emirate attractive to millions of tourists is not one, two or a handful of things, but that it offers something for everyone, whether they be children, teenagers, young adults, couples, families, groups or older travellers.
Who doesn’t know about Dubai’s iconic landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall, but for the uninitiated, Dubai also offers several more attractions and experiences that are unique to this desert oasis.
Stunning beaches, water sports, indoor skiing, ice skating, a host of desert activities, a growing arts and culture scene, and amazing cuisines that span the globe are just a few of the other things that make Dubai, well, Dubai.
“Last year, Dubai welcomed more than 11 million visitors and the aim is to continue to grow these numbers by constantly enhancing every aspect of Dubai’s destination offering, making Dubai city the top choice for all types of travellers from across the globe.”
Even as the city becomes more global than several other established international hotspots, it is literally untouched by the crime that usually accompanies globalisation.
People in Dubai don’t fear stepping out alone even late at night, confident in the knowledge that the emirate’s world-class police has ensured that it remains one of the safest places on the planet.
In addition, stories abound of its friendly and honest residents, some of whom have returned millions that they found left behind by an absent-minded tourist or fellow resident.
The Burj Khalifa is a mega tall skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is the tallest structure in the world, standing at 829.8 m (2,722 ft).
Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004, with the exterior completed 5 years later in 2009.
The building was opened in 2010 as part of a new development called Downtown Dubai.
It is designed to be the centrepiece of large-scale, mixed-use development.
The decision to build the building is reportedly based on the government’s decision to diversify from an oil-based economy, and for Dubai to gain international recognition.
The building was named in honour of the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The building broke numerous height records, including its designation as the tallest tower in the world.
The design of Burj Khalifa is derived from patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture, incorporating cultural and historical elements particular to the region, such as in the Great Mosque of Samarra.
The Y-shaped plan is designed for residential and hotel usage.
A buttressed core structural system is used to support the height of the building, and the cladding system is designed to withstand Dubai’s summer temperatures.
It contains a total of 57 elevators and 8 escalators.
Critical reception to Burj Khalifa has been generally positive, and the building has received many awards.
